Summer 2014 Newsletter - Time to Think About Fall & Winter Gardens, News from the Farm, Gardener's Almanac, About Deep Discounts, Promotional Offer

Hello Friends,

Here on the farm the cold, rainy weather is finally history and the spring planted gardens are thriving.  You know what that means to serious gardeners?  It is now time to plan and start getting our fall and winter gardens planted!

If you are a new gardener, you might be wondering what I am talking about.  After all, don't you plant a summer garden in the summer?  Well actually, no.  We refer to gardens by the season in which they are harvested.  Along with getting a fall garden in, there is also still plenty of time to sow a second planting of many of the shorter season vegetables.

To give folks a starting point, we have been working on improving our educational resource site ( and have created some late season gardening resources:

Last year I wrote a blog post on this subject which you can read by clicking here.

News from the Farm - Here is a quick listing of what has been going on around the farm and at Victory Seed Company since the last newsletter:

Highlight on Research

Click here to reach the Victory Horticultural LibraryAs a mission driven organization, our focus in on the identifying, finding, growing and keeping rare seed varieties available to home gardeners.

An important part of this process is to make sure that the seeds that we sell match the historical record for the variety.

Old books, bulletins, magazine articles, and old seed catalogs are important tools for us. Check out the Victory Horticultural Library for more information.

  • Crops representing seeds for your 2015 gardens are sown and well underway.  Despite some very unsettled spring weather, we were able to work around storms, get fields worked and planted three weeks earlier than in recent years.  We are hopeful for a bountiful harvest.

  • Operating on a tight budget, word-of-mouth remains our primary form of advertising.  Thank you for telling your gardening friends and family about us and for talking about us on your Facebook and other social media pages!

  • Along with our Facebook page, Twitter, YouTube channel, Pinterest board, and our blog, I recently added an Instagram page and am learning to use that as a tool for staying in contact with those of you who are interested in keeping up with what is going on around the farm. Please visit and do become participants in the conversations.

It is too early to make the New for 2015 list public right now. Nature has a way creating (unwelcome) change.  So until the harvest is safely in the barns, please rest assured that we are working on fulfilling the primary tenet of our mission. That is, we have several interesting family heirlooms planted this summer.  Watch the web site later this season for availabilities.  Although our web site contains many rare seed varieties, here is a link to ones that we have introduced to the gardening public over the years.

We hope that you enjoy the rest of your summer and that your harvests are bountiful.  We look forward to being of service to you and thank you for allowing us to be partners in your gardens.

Until next time, gardening success to you,

Mike Dunton

Summer is Officially Here! - Along with the Fall Gardening resources mentioned above, for some ideas about current gardening tasks, check out our July Almanac and August Almanac pages on the website.

About Deep Discounts and Huge Sales - This is the time of year when many of the larger seed companies are offering deep discounts on their mass produced, often internationally sourced, seeds.  Often this is because their seed has been packaged for sale in the current year and they have to clear out inventory before it becomes unsellable.

  • We price our seeds fairly, all year round, so you don't have to wait for sales - order whenever you need your seeds.

  • We offer seeds all year round because our gardening supporters garden all year round.

  • In addition to our already competitive every day prices, we regularly offer discount promotional opportunities (like the one below) for additional savings.

  • Instead of dumping our seeds, we believe in charity.  Every year, through our charitable giving program (click here for more info), we donate thousands of dollars worth of product to people who are in need.  You can see some of the recent recipients by clicking here.  We could not not do this charity work, in conjunction with our variety preservation work, without the support of your orders.  Thank you!

Keep in mind that cheap seeds usually are not the best seeds!

Current Promotional Opportunity

Enter 20fall14 to earn 10% off of your next order.  Now is a great time to order your Fall / Winter Garden seeds. For instructions on how to use the coupon code, Click here.  This offer expires at midnight PST on August 1, 2014.

Please DO forward this email offer to all of your gardening friends and family.  Your word-of-mouth recommendations help promote our seed variety preservation work and are our primary form of advertising. Thank you!

Share Your Experience and Make Our Site Better - Although your orders are what keep our bills paid and directly support our seed variety preservation work, there are other ways that you can help - click here.  For example, if you garden with Victory Seeds®, you can make the site more useful to everyone by sharing pictures, your experiences and writing a review.  Reviewing a variety is simple.  Just revisit the variety's product page and look for the following link [ Review this item]. You can even earn 25 Victory Points™ for each review that is approved!

For more ideas on ways to help that not only don't cost you money but may even earn you store credit, visit our support opportunity page at  We really do appreciate you taking the time to do this.

About Our Work - If you have read our mission statement, you know that we do not exist as an organization to simply sell seeds.  We sell seeds to fund our plant variety preservation work and to keep rare, heirloom and open-pollinated varieties available to home gardeners.  We are a little different from other seed companies in this way.  Thank you for your continued support.
