January 2018 Newsletter
another year slipping by, 2018 marks a special milestone for the Victory Seed
Company; our 20th Anniversary! For the past two decades we have stayed true to
our foundational mission, and with the support provided by your orders, we have
diligently worked at preserving as much as we can of our shared horticultural
a natural time to stop and reminisce about our achievements, as well as to dream
about what we will accomplish in the years ahead. This work is also very
relational in nature. We have made so many friends over the years. And the
bittersweet memories of the family and friends that have passed on, are
remembered fondly through their seed legacies.
now here on the farm, all of our waking moments are focused on making sure your
garden seed orders are quickly fulfilled. If you care about your purchases, and
hard-earned money, supporting something important, please do consider making the
Victory Seed Company your partner in the garden this year as your primary
mission-driven preservation organization, your purchases directly support our
work keeping interesting, rare plant varieties available. It also is our sole
source of funding for locating, documenting, growing and offering additional
"new" varieties every year.
example, this past year we are excited about adding 14 new dwarf tomato
varieties, 13 new sweet potatoes, 16 corn additions, 6 tobacco varieties, and
numerous other heirlooms. If you purchased Victory Seeds®
for your garden last year, please know that you had a direct hand in making
these varieties available ... Thank you!
Although the majority of these new additions have already been added to the site (http://www.victoryseeds.com/new.html),
we still have a few stragglers to post. For example, one of our grower's in the
Northeast just got two varieties of garden peas to us. One is an old family
heirloom and will be a new introduction, the other is an older variety that has
been out of stock for some time. They are being germination tested so watch for them,
and others, to show

Growers Network Focus on David Pendergrass
An integral part of our plant variety preservation work, and one reason why we can
offer so many different varieties every year, is our Growers Network. By working
with a select group of experienced, small farm-based seed producers, we not only
continue to expand the number of varieties we are protecting and offering, but
we are also helping to support other like-minded preservationists.
David Pendergrass is an old friend of ours who works from his
ancestral family farm in Middle Tennessee. He raises various long-season
varieties that we have trouble growing up here in Oregon. Additionally,
David's own collection of heirloom varieties is available exclusively from the
Victory Seed Company.
David founded the New Hope Seed Company as a regional resource
working to preserve Southern heirlooms that were rapidly disappearing. One area
of focus has been his work building an impressive collection of rare tobacco
If you unfamiliar with tobacco plants, they are in my opinion,
quite impressive. Varieties range in mature height from three feet to over ten
feet with leaves that can be up to three feet long. At the top of their stalks,
they produce clusters with numerous flowers that are attractive to pollinators.
And all of that plant structure grows, in one season no less, from a tiny seed
that is about the size of a pinhole! If you are interested in tobacco seeds, we
offer over 60 unique varieties here -
Tobacco Plants Available Now ...For those of you that would like to start from plants, David
offers a select number of varieties every year and is currently accepting orders
for shipment later this spring. You can order plants directly from David from

About Our Work - If you
have read our mission statement,
you know that we do not exist as an organization to simply sell seeds. We sell
seeds to fund our plant variety preservation work and to keep rare, heirloom and
open-pollinated varieties available to home gardeners. We are a little
different from other
seed companies in this way. Thank you for your continued support.
of our seeds are open-pollinated, non-hybrid, public domain or open source, and not chemically treated. As an early signer of the "Safe Seed Pledge" we will never knowingly sell GMO seeds. Many of our seeds are family heirlooms, most are old standard varieties that are hard to find.
